A lecture on how to identify, heal, and prevent burnout for United Nations staff as part of the Documentation Division Series. Prolonged occupational stress leads to emotional and physical depletion. Ultimately it leads to the development of maladaptive behaviors such as cynicism, hostility, and detachment. How can we pay attention to the subtle warnings of burnout before it becomes problematic? How can we become resilient, skillful, self-compassionate, and compassionate with others in the workplace? This presentation offers the scientific psychological background of the causes and conditions that provoke burnout, along with practical exercises for stress management, identification of the mental traps that generate exhaustion, and the ways to achieve self-care at work.
